How to use the Tracker Long Line for Recall Training

The Tracker Long Line is one of the most effective tools for teaching your dog reliable recall, helping them learn freedom with boundaries. Here’s how to use it safely and correctly:

1. Start in a calm, distraction-free area
Begin training in your backyard or a quiet park where your dog can focus on you. Attach the long line to your dog’s harness or collar.


2. Let your dog explore
Allow your dog to wander and sniff while you hold the end of the line. Keep the line loose, the goal is to give your dog freedom to move while still maintaining a safe connection.


3. Practice recall gradually
Call your dog’s name in a happy, upbeat tone, followed by your recall command (for example, “Come!” or “Here!”). When they turn toward you, praise immediately and gently reel them in using smooth, consistent motion and never yank the line. Reward with treats, praise, or play when they reach you.


4. Build distance and distractions over time
Once your dog is consistent in calm environments, begin training in areas with more distractions like parks, open fields, or beaches. Gradually increase the distance up to 10m as their reliability improves.
